Planning the Move
Moving an entire family and 2 dogs to another country is no easy task. First, we had to work on selling our house and doing it quickly and make plans for where we would stay after the house was sold if we had to move out before the date we flew out. Luckily for us we were able to arrange the closing date the day before we left the country.
What to take?
Next came the daunting task of deciding what to take with us, what to store with relatives, what to sell and what to give away. With baggage fees and shipping fees so extremely high, we decided to take only select personal items like photographs and what clothing we felt we could not live without. We took sentimental items and items we did not want to sell or give away but could not take with us to store at a relatives house. Everything else, we grudgingly sold off in estate sales and gave away or donated what was left.
What About Electronics?
We took our blue ray players and X-box as well and it is a good thing we did. First let me say that the voltage is very different in Ireland than what we used in the U.S. and the step down adapters just did not work. You will have to go to a computer supply, resale or repair shop to get a replacement UK cord or risk burning up your X-Box once you plug it in. You will want to take these with you if you are bringing along your own stash of games and videos because the piracy protections on these machines and discs include REGION CODES which will not allow you to play games or videos that are from another region like UK & Ireland and vice versa. That means if you bring your games and videos but no player, you will not be able to use them on the UK/Ireland versions. Also, if you buy games and videos in Ireland, you will need to buy a UK/Ireland version of the machine as well. This was not the case on ALL videos and games but it was on most. DO NOT TRY TO BRING YOUR TELEVISIONS as the amount of shipping and import tax you will have to pay will far outweigh any savings on buying a new television.
IMPORTANT FOR PET OWNERS!
If you are taking your pets with you, you must read the Moving Pets to Ireland section as the rules are very tight and everything must be timed perfectly. This is so important that I decided to dedicate an entire section just to moving your pets.
